Contemplative explorer of Icelandic lands, based in Akureyri

Iceland naturally invites you to slow down. When you embrace its rhythm, its silences and its spaces, the journey becomes a true inner experience.

Jean-Marc

Settled in Iceland for nearly twenty years, Jean-Marc Plessy has developed a deeply personal relationship with the landscapes of the country's north, where he founded the Alkemia agency as well as the Helgafell retreat centre. A photographer, aikido teacher and shiatsu practitioner, he approaches travel as an experience of presence, contemplation and reconnection with nature. Through his itineraries, Jean-Marc favours a slower and more immersive discovery of Iceland. Guided hikes, comfortable 4x4 crossings, wild regions far from major tourist flows: he likes to create journeys where one takes time to observe the changing lights, the elements, the silences and the vastness of Icelandic landscapes. His approach combines knowledge of the terrain, human sensitivity and a quest for balance, to offer a travel experience turned towards what is essential and the depth of the places traversed.

Everything you need to know about Iceland

Our local experts share their knowledge to prepare your trip.

When to visit Iceland?

Iceland reveals itself differently with each season, and every period has its own unique appeal. From June to mid-August, the midnight sun opens access to the Highlands, Landmannalaugar and the Sprengisandur tracks: this is the time for long hikes and puffins on the cliffs. September and October deliver rare autumn colors, nights already dark enough for the Northern Lights, and far fewer crowds on the Golden Circle. Winter, from November to March, requires flexibility — roads sometimes closed, changeable weather — but offers a quieter Iceland, shaped by ice caves in Vatnajökull and snow-covered villages. Spring remains our hidden gem of a season: nature awakening, soft light, reasonable rates.

What budget should you plan for a trip to Iceland?

Let's be straightforward: Iceland is expensive, and transparency on this matter is part of our job. For a carefully crafted trip, expect an average of €2,500 to €3,500 per person over ten days, flights not included, in comfortable guesthouses with suitable car rental. Winter itineraries or those requiring a 4x4 for the Highlands climb higher, around €4,000 to €5,000. Several levers allow you to adjust: duration, accommodation type (farms, cabins, design hotels), season, and level of guiding. High-logistics activities — glacier outings, whale watching in Húsavík, scenic flights — quickly add up. We build each quote by clearly explaining where every krona goes.

Why organize your trip with a local agency in Iceland?

Alkemia is based in Helgafell, in the Eyjafjörður fjord near Akureyri — the only English-speaking agency located outside Reykjavík. This northern location changes everything: we know the Tröllaskagi peninsula, the Westfjords, and Mývatn like we know our own neighborhood, not as a line on a map. Harpa, Icelandic, and Jean-Marc, who has lived here for nearly twenty years, design each itinerary based on a network of addresses, farmers, guides, and fishermen met over the years. We are committed to Leave No Trace, WATA, and authorized by the Ministry of Tourism. Concretely, this means a contact person available on site, coherent logistical choices, and the ability to step off saturated circuits without improvising.

What to see on an Iceland tour?

The Ring Road loop remains a solid framework: southern waterfalls (Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss), black sand beaches near Vík, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, the more understated East fjords, Mývatn geothermal area and Dettifoss waterfall to the north. But the Iceland that truly captures us often begins where the main road ends: Snæfellsnes peninsula at dawn, the Westfjords and their bird colonies at Látrabjarg, the Hornstrandir trails, or the Highlands in July — Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, Askja. Add a night on a farm, a soak in a hidden hot spring, an encounter with a horse breeder: it's this weaving together of landscapes and people that gives your journey its depth.
