Houay Xay is the capital of Bokeo province, situated in northern Laos. This charming locality holds a strategic position along the left bank of the Mekong, facing Chiang Khong across the river. The town is renowned for hosting the Fourth Friendship Bridge between Laos and Thailand, replacing the traditional ferry service across the river.

To reach Houay Xay from Thailand, cross the Fourth Friendship Bridge at the Thai border. You can take a bus from Chiang Rai or the border town of Chiang Khong. Once at the border, a tuk-tuk will take you to Houay Xai's main bus station. Buses from Chiang Rai, Thailand, serve Houay Xai four times daily, at a cost of 220 THB.

If you prefer the route from Vientiane, take a bus, though it's best to travel during daylight hours as the road often lacks lighting in many areas, with few buildings along the way. This could cause problems in case of breakdown.

The town also has an airport offering flights from Vientiane three times a week.
