Kuang Si Butterfly Park
Kuang Si Butterfly Park
Just 300 meters from Kuang Si Falls, this community-run park combines gardens, butterfly enclosure, natural pool and restaurant, 30 km from Luang Prabang.
Kuang Si Butterfly Park (Kuang Si Butterfly Park) is located at the entrance of Thapene village, 300 meters before the Kuang Si Falls parking lot, approximately 30 kilometers south of Luang Prabang. This modest community-run park combines three themed gardens, a butterfly enclosure, a secondary waterfall and a relaxation area with a natural pool. A visit here is both educational and peaceful.
Why visit the park
The site stands out for its dual purpose. On one hand, it's a private ecological project that showcases local butterfly fauna in a recreated environment. On the other, it's a pleasant stop before or after visiting Kuang Si Falls, with a restaurant, small spa and a pool fed by the river. Families, garden enthusiasts and travelers seeking a peaceful alternative to the crowds at the falls will find something for them here. Allow 1 to 2 hours to explore all five zones.
History of the park
The park was born from an ecological project initiated by a Dutch couple: Olaf, an art director, and Ineke, an art therapist. Enchanted by Laos during a personal trip, they decided to return to give an ecological dimension to their work. Olaf designed the site's plans, which he developed with craftsmen from the neighboring village. They planted vegetation species from several regions of the country, and butterflies naturally settled there.
The park opens to the public in January 2014. Beyond welcoming visitors, it funds sponsored educational programs for Laotian schoolchildren: transportation, lunch, educational materials and guided visits. These initiatives aim to raise children's awareness of the importance of preserving local biodiversity, in connection with their health and well-being.
What to see and do on-site
The park is organized into five distinct zones:
- The colorful garden: flower beds of local species designed to attract butterflies.
- The orchid garden: a selection of tropical species native to Laos.
- The cactus garden: more mineral in character, contrasting with the other spaces.
- The secondary waterfall: natural extension of Kuang Si Falls, ideal for swimming.
- The butterfly enclosure: habitat housing between 1,000 and 1,300 individuals, representing more than fifty local species.
A guide provided at the entrance explains the metamorphosis cycle, from caterpillar to chrysalis, then to butterfly. The park's pathways, lined with small streams, lead to the enclosure where visitors can walk freely among the butterflies.
The relaxation area includes a natural pool, a small spa at the entrance and a fish pedicure where small fish nibble away dead skin from feet. The restaurant, set near a duck pond, offers sandwiches, pastries, refreshing drinks and coffee.
When to visit
To observe butterflies in flight, choose warm and sunny days. The months of July, August, October and November are considered most favorable: light and temperature stimulate their activity. The first hours after opening are also the calmest to enjoy the site before the influx of visitors heading to the waterfalls.

How to get there from Luang Prabang
The park is located approximately 30 km south of the city. Several transport options are available:
Tuk-tuk or minivan
The most common solution. Shared departures from Luang Prabang operate on a negotiated basis. A private vehicle gives you more flexibility, with the driver waiting on-site for your return. Allow approximately 1 hour travel time.
Public bus
A regular bus departs from Naluang station in mid-afternoon and parks for two hours before returning. This is the most economical option, but the most restrictive in terms of schedules.
Scooter
Day rental available in Luang Prabang. A flexible solution for riders comfortable on small Laotian roads.
Bicycle
Suited to experienced cyclists. The route includes steep climbs and takes approximately 2 hours each way.
What to see nearby
Kuang Si Butterfly Park makes for a complementary stop during a day organized around Kuang Si Falls, located 300 meters further on, and their sun bear sanctuary. To further explore the region, several sites deserve a detour:
- Nahm Dong Park, another nature space near Luang Prabang.
- Pha Ngern Mount, viewpoint over the Mekong valley.
- Tham Kang Caves, to explore on a detour toward Nong Khiaw.
