Islande has no railway crossing it. However, several other modes of transportation bring the land of fire and ice to life. You can travel by plane, by car, by bike, or take various public transport options to cross borders while enjoying magnificent landscapes along the way. Here's an overview of the essentials you need to know about coming to Islande.

Flying to Islande

The best and easiest way to get to Islande is by plane. The majority of international flights arrive at Keflavik International Airport, located approximately 50km from the capital, Reykjavik. From Paris, direct flights allow you to reach Islande in just 3 hours and 30 minutes. From Canada, you should expect around 6 hours of flight time.

Several airlines serve Keflavik Airport:

  • Icelandair, undoubtedly the most well-known,
  • Wow Air, the low-cost carrier,
  • KLM, notably from Copenhagen.

Other Islande cities have airports, but these are mainly served by domestic flights.

Taking the ferry to Islande

Although the majority of travelers reach Islande by plane, some opt for the maritime route. From Denmark, the Smyrilline company is the main provider connecting the two countries via the Norröna from Hirtshals. The ship docks in the fjords of the East at Seyðisfjörður. The crossing takes place once a week, twice in summer, between February and November. There are packages that include a two-day stopover at the Faroe Islands. The direct journey between Hirtshals and Seyðisfjörður takes an average of two days.

Traveling by car in Islande

It is entirely possible to reach Islande by road. Roads connect the country with Denmark and Norway, among others. In most cases, vacationers plan a stop at the Faroe Islands, which stretches the journey over 5 days, or even a week.

With its impressive glaciers, distinctive volcanoes, and fjords, Islande is a land of countless facets that will immerse you like a dream. The car remains the best alternative for traversing the island in a short time while appreciating nature's wonderful creations within the country. Of course, the ideal option is to rent a vehicle. Traffic is light on Islande's roads, making navigation easy and pleasant. If you have the opportunity, take Route 1, which stretches 1,339 km and is entirely paved.
