Vík í Mýrdal
Vík í Mýrdal, Iceland's most southerly village, brings together a volcanic black sand beach, basalt columns and the sea stacks of Reynisdrangar — an iconic stop along the south coast.
Vík í Mýrdal is Iceland's southernmost village, nestled between the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap and the North Atlantic. Its volcanic black sand beaches, basalt columns and the distinctive silhouette of its hilltop church make it one of the most photographed stops on Route 1. The village is home to around 300 residents and serves as a base for exploring the south coast.
Quick facts
- Access: Route 1 (Ring Road), approximately 180 km east of Reykjavík by car.
- Duration: half a day to a full day to combine beach, cliffs and hiking.
- Reynisfjara beach: free access, but swimming prohibited — sudden waves and deadly currents.
- What to bring: waterproof jacket and waterproof shoes essential year-round; strong winds frequent.
- Accessibility: the Reynisfjara car park is accessible; the black sand beach is walkable for a short distance, but trails to the cliffs are uneven.
What to see
The village is organised around a few streets, a petrol station and a white Lutheran church overlooking the bay. The Reynisfjara beach, west of the village, holds most of the attractions: black sand, hexagonal basalt columns forming the Hálsanefshellir cave, and the sea stacks of Reynisdrangar rising from the ocean. Puffins nest in the Reynisfjall cliffs in spring and summer.
History and context
The name literally means "bay in the Mýrdalur valley". The village developed as a fishing port, though fishing is now marginal to the local economy. It lives under the constant threat of the Katla volcano, buried beneath Mýrdalsjökull: a major eruption would trigger a jökulhlaup (glacial outburst flood) capable of engulfing the area. Residents have an evacuation plan to the church, the most accessible high point nearby.
Highlights
Reynisfjara beach
Iceland's most famous beach. Basalt columns stack like giant organ pipes along the cliff face. The so-called "sneaker waves" arrive without warning: stay at least 30 metres from the water's edge and never turn your back to the ocean.
Reynisdrangar
These basalt needles piercing the Atlantic are, according to legend, trolls turned to stone by the rising sun. They reach heights of up to 66 metres and shelter colonies of seabirds — gannets, guillemots, puffins.
Vík church
Perched on Víkurfjall hill, this red and white Lutheran church offers sweeping views over the bay and Reynisdrangar. The walk from the village takes about ten minutes on a marked trail.
Reynisfjall cliffs
The trail climbing from the beach to the summit of Reynisfjall (340 m) rewards hikers with a bird's-eye view of the black sand beach and ocean. Allow about an hour return; the path is highly exposed to wind.
Photography tips
The soft light of early morning and evening accentuates the contrast between black sand and white foam. In winter, the northern lights are visible from the beach on clear nights. For the basalt columns, a low angle emphasises the hexagonal geometry. Avoid midday in summer: light is flat and the beach crowded.
Location and access
Vík sits on Route 1, approximately 180 km from Reykjavík. Long-distance buses (Strætó and private operators) connect Reykjavík to Vík, but a car remains the most practical way to explore the surroundings. Reynisfjara beach is about 5 km west of the village via Route 215. The village has a petrol station, a few accommodation options and a supermarket.
